KAWS '94
Opening at the Brooklyn Museum this Friday, “KAWS: WHAT PARTY,” will celebrate the work of artist Brian Donnelly. As part of the show, the sketch above showcases the variety of mediums and visual styles that Brian’s graffiti tag has appeared in since the late 90’s. (discovered here)
Studio Signs
Nick Lee is the owner of Studio Signs and Pictoral Displays Inc., in Portland, Oregon. Along with this father, Melvin, Nick has been hand-painting signage for several years now, adorning the streets of Portland with one-of-a-kind type design that allows brands to stand out. (discovered here)
Simon and Moose
Simon and Moose is the design studio of Cymone Wilder who (with support of her brother, Cedric) helps define brands through her unique lettering style and captivating design aesthetics. You may also become inspired by looking through her portfolio of photography. (discovered here)
Texas-Sized Type
If you ever visit Austin, Texas (highly recommended when SXSW isn’t in town) then you may come across the mural art designs of Tara Johnston. Tara has been lettering since 2010 and it shows - her compositions stop you in your tracks thanks to her bold floral patterns and beautifully rendered type. (discovered here)
Hand-Spun Typography
I’ve read hundreds of About pages, and I think “hand-spun” is one of the most unique ways to describe bespoke lettering. I’m now hooked on the work of St. Louis-based lettering artist, Theresa Williams. Her Nosh magazine cover is a self-initiated project, but could easily exist on any real-world newsstand. Leandro Assis is an outstanding lettering artist and art director from Rio de Janeiro with a portfolio of work that just makes you smile. Leandro recently completed a branding campaign for YouTube to celebrate Black History Month which serves as a fitting reflection of his dedication to black culture and LGBTQ+ rights. Letters by Lamonov
Dmitri Lamonov is a Russian contemporary artist, designer and calligrapher who prioritizes typography in his work. What makes Dmitri’s portfolio so compelling is his modern approach to Old Slavic letterforms as exemplified in “Letterfall” above. The results are captivating. (discovered here)
Vintage Vibes
Buenos Aires is home to graphic artist, illustrator, and professor Alan Berry Rhys who incorporates texture and hand-drawn letterforms into his work to convey a retro aesthetic. As a fan of texture and grit, I fully endorse the style choices. (discovered here)
Coping Through Lettering
Viktoria Cichoń is a multi-talented lettering and tattoo artist who applies bright colors to her fun and visually engaging lettering styles. She recently dealt with quarantine by posing questions to another artist, Kristina Wedel, and responding with illustrations. The results will brighten any stay-at-home day. (discovered here)
Daily Dedication
Memphis-based Lettering Artist and @coolurbanhippie, Eso Tolson, crafts a bold lettering style that is both impactful and dynamic. I’m now also inspired to go out and make dope stuff every day. He’s recently worked with brands like Best Buy and Coca Cola. (discovered here)
Basquiat Inspires New NBA Logotype
The Brooklyn Nets have released a city-edition jersey that pays tribute to artist Jean-Michel Basquiat by replacing the typical “BKLYN NETS” logotype with hand lettering inspired by the artist’s iconic visual style. (discovered here)
